Delhi Chain Snatching: Woman MP Attacked During Morning Walk, Writes to Amit Shah

During the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament, several Members of Parliament have arrived in Delhi, with many staying in and around the high-security zone of Chanakyapuri in South Delhi. Despite the tight security, a shocking incident took place on Monday morning when a woman MP from Tamil Nadu became the victim of chain snatching during her morning walk.

Lok Sabha MP R. Sudha, who represents the Mayiladuthurai constituency in Tamil Nadu, was attacked by an unidentified man who snatched her gold chain and fled the scene. Following the incident, she wrote a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, describing her ordeal and raising concerns over women’s safety in the national capital.

What did woman MP say to Home Minister?

In her letter to the Home Minister, R. Sudha wrote, “Many MPs have not yet received accommodation, and I am one of them. I am currently staying at Tamil Nadu Bhavan and go for a morning walk every day. Today as well, I went on a walk with a female Rajya Sabha MP when someone snatched my chain.”

R. Sudha wrote in her letter:

“This happened between approximately 6:15 and 6:20 in the morning. We were near Gate No. 3-4 of the Poland Embassy when a man wearing a helmet came on a scooty and snatched the chain from around my neck. During this, I not only sustained injuries to my neck but was also hurt during the scuffle.”

Seeking help from the Home Minister, R. Sudha said, “The accused's face was completely covered. Because of this, I could not recognise him. We informed the Delhi Police about the incident, and they advised us to file a written complaint.”

Questions raised over women’s safety

In the letter to Home Minister Amit Shah, she also raised concerns about the safety of women in Delhi. R. Sudha stated that if women are not safe even in high-security zones like Chanakyapuri, then where will they feel safe? “My gold chain weighed more than 4 grams. I am in shock after this incident. The accused must be caught and punished as soon as possible.”

10 Delhi Police teams begin investigation

Following the attack on the MP, Delhi Police has swung into action. Ten teams have been formed to scan CCTV footage from across the area. A case has been registered, and an investigation has begun. Additionally, security around Tamil Nadu Bhavan has also been tightened.
